In many cases, we have found that people have back taxes or unfiled taxes because they feel they don’t have to file. This may be a result of thinking that maybe they were under some kind of income threshold where taxes do not have to be filed. When in reality, the threshold to not pay or file taxes is only $400 if you are self employed. One very important thing people fail to realize is that even if you don’t have the money to pay the taxes, it’s important that you always file your taxes every single year. By filing the tax return every year, you will avoid late filing penalties. The IRS and Massachusetts State will never negotiate with you on unpaid taxes until they have all the tax returns filed and up to date. Nothing can be done until all the returns have been filed.

The main reason we find that people come into our office to file their back taxes is because they have a notice or lean from Massachusetts State. There are other reasons such as getting married, wanting to clean up returns that weren’t filed properly before starting a business. Whatever the reasons may be, here at Alek Tax and more we are happy to help each client weigh the options of their unique situation.
